Uzès
Uzès [yzɛs] ( Usès in Provençal Occitan , according to the classical standard ) is a French commune located in the east of the Gard department , in the Occitanie region .
Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by Les Seynes, Alzon and Les Rosselles. Included in the Gardon gorges , the town has a remarkable natural heritage composed of a natural area of ecological, fauna and flora interest .
Uzès is an urban commune which has 8,390 inhabitants in 2020. It is the center town of the Uzès conurbation and is part of the Uzès catchment area . Its inhabitants are called Uzétiens or Uzétiennes.
Uzès is described as "the first duchy of France", this title being linked to the duchy only because of the order of precedence in the hierarchy of the nobility, attributed to the Duke of Uzès in 1565 by Charles IX , then king of France. The title was linked to the man and not to his lands.
It is the main town of the Uzès region.
